Some folks may be interested in understanding what
technology is used on The CAV Website. There are a few interesting technologies that we use as follows:
- Apache - We use an Apache Web Server. It is reliable, easy to use and is supported on many platforms.
- GMail - The IT Team uses GMail and other Google features to coordinate their activities and communicate with each other.
- Google Calendar - Each CAV formation publishes their event calendar in a Google Calendar. Google Calendars are used because they are extremely easy to use and allow our members to integrate, directly, with their desktop calendar application or handheld device so The CAV Calendars are always available to them. PHP - The CAV uses PHP for server-side processing and to enable advanced features like those found in the Kitshop ordering process.
- PHPbb - The CAV uses the, very popular, PHPbb forum application to enable forum features and communication by its members.
- Picasa - All albums for CAV formations are hosted by Google's Picasa. This makes them available to members for embedding into other sites as required and relieves The CAV of the burden of hosting and backing up the images.
- Blogspot - Each CAV Formation has a blog available for their use on Blogspot.
- Tabber - The Tabs on the albums, event boards and kitshop pages were created using The Tabber from BarelyFitz Designs
- CSS Columns - The height of the CSS elements on each page is controlled and corrected using the CSS Equal Columns Height script (v1.01), modified for The CAV Site.
- MySQL - MySQL is used to store data for the forum and also to maintain the list of Unit Registration Codes required to register for the forum
- Smart Guestbook - The CAV Guestbook is hosted by Smart Guestbook. This makes it very easy for us because we don't have to worry about it
- Interac - The CAV Kitshop now accepts payment using Interac EMail. If you bank with a Canadian Bank that provides you online banking services, you can likely pay for your kitshop purchases using EMail!
- Other Google Features - The CAV IT Team uses Google Sites to coordinate our own activities. We also use Google Analytics to track how our sites are being used, what is most popular, where vistitors are coming from etc.
- DimDim - The CAV IT Team uses DimDim to hold team meetings on the Internet. Its free for up to 20 participants and you can share your desktop, documents etc.
